History

The first people to live in the beautiful valley were the natives of North America. The first tribes that lived in the valley were the ancestors of what who we know today as the JuaneƱo and the Gabrielino people.

The Spanish laid claim to California in the 1500's. However, it was not until 200 years later that the Spanish first made an effort to colonize the area. The first spanish to colonize the area were Catholic missionaries and Spanish soldiers.

In 1821, after Mexico won its independence, California, then part of Mexico, began an intense period of change. The Valley's missions became more secular and begin restricting the religious duties of priests. Vast swathes of land were given as ranches to citizens of the valley. Changes such as these marked a new era for the vibrant valley.

There are many wonderful parks and wilderness preserves in the beautiful Valley area. Residents of the Valley enjoy a myriad of options for camping, hiking, biking and other recreational activities.

Popular courses, include the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club, the Tijeras Creek Golf Club, the Saddleback Golf Driving Range, the Mission Viejo Golf Course and the Aliso Viejo Country Club.

The valley is home to many venues for the entertainment and pleasure of its residents. From museums, to galleries and theaters the Valley has it all. One popular historic attraction is the Heritage Hill Historic Park. The park offers a look back into the Valley's days gone by.
